Abstract
959,361. Spray carburetters. BENDIX CORPORATION. Nov. 16, 1962 [Jan. 2, 1962], No. 43477/62. Heading F1B. In fuel control apparatus for a multi-cylinder fuel injection I.C. engine having a fuel metering device 16 Fig. 1, a fuel distributer 12, has a casing 178, Fig. 2, with an annular member 184, secured therein, having radially extending passages 186 communicating with outlet ports, a valve member 194 movable relative to passages 186, to vary the effective flow area, by means 196 responsive to the pressure differential between the fuel pressure at the inlet port 58 and the ambient air pressure, resilient means .biasing the valve member to a closed position in opposition to the pressure differential. Fuel under pressure enters conduit 30 and passes through filter 31, opening 32 into chamber 34 and through a mixture control and shut-off plate 38 into passage 40 and thence through a passage 44 in valve member 46 which contains metering restriction 48 and through an idle mixture control plate 50 to passage 52 and valve assembly 54. Passage 52 communicates with the inlet port of fuel distributer 12 which divides fuel flow into equal increments each increment being discharged through an outlet port 62 and passage 64 leading to a fuel injection nozzle 66. The mixture control plate 38 is rotated by lever 80 connected to shaft 78 and the idle control plate 50 is rotated by a lever 92 connected to shaft 90, which is interconnected through an adjustable linkage 108 and lever 28 with shaft 26 carrying air throttle 24. Fuel flow through valve assembly 54 is controlled by ball valve 118 controlled by diaphragms 128, 140 which are interconnected by a pin 150 passing through a fluid seal 137. Diaphragm 140 responds to air impact pressure and Venturi throat pressure in chambers 160 and 162 respectively and diaphragm 128 responds to metered fuel pressure in passage 52 and unmetered fuel pressure in chamber 165 which communicates with chamber 34 via passage 166, port 168, passage 170, and opening 172 in mixture control plate 38. In fuel distributer 12, fuel under pressure from the inlet port communicates through passage 212 with chamber 190 and through passage 210 with the underside of spring-loaded diaphragm 196 which is subjected to ambient air pressure on its upper side. Fuel passes through bore 214 and through radial passages 216 into an annular recess 218 which is partly of constant radial depth and partly tapered. Increasing fuel pressure causes valve member 194 to rise so that recess 218 communicates with slots 186, the effective flow area increasing until the pressure drop across the distributer is subtsantially zero. In modificationsthe annular recess has a constant radial depth and the slots 186 are of modified shapes.
