Abstract

1336604 Spray carburetters ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 27 Nov 1970 [1 Dec 1969] 56432/70 Heading F1B Fuel injection system for and I.C. engine having separate ignition and continuous injection into the inlet manifold comprises a gauging element and a throttle valve in series in the inlet manifold, the gauging element consisting of a disc fixed at one end of a balanced rocking lever arranged across the direction of air flow and which is displaced against a restoring force through a distance proportional to the amount of air flowing through the inlet manifold so that it moves into a section of the inlet pipe which is divergent in the direction of air flow, the movement of the lever controlling the crosssectional area of a fuel-valve passageway to meter an amount of fuel proportional to the airflow. Combustion air is drawn through a filter 2 in a housing 1 and acts on a gauging element 4, moving it into a conical section 3. The air flow is controlled by a butterfly valve 8. Gauging element 4 is fixed to a lever 9, supported on a pivot 10 and counter-balanced by a sliding weight 11 locked by a screw 12. The lever 9 carries a roller 40 which bears on the end of the movable part 15 of a fuel metering valve. Fuel is drawn from a tank 21 by a pump 19 and fed to an annular channel 25 in the meter housing, which communicates with a number of chambers 28 and with the reduced-diameter centre section of the movable part 15. As the part 15 is moved the centre section overlaps ports 31 by which the fuel passes to chambers 32 and hence through passages 33 to the injection nozzles. A diaphragm 29 forms one side of each of the chambers 28 and 32 and also acts as a flap valve for the passages 33, to maintain a constant pressure drop across the valve irrespective of the amount of fuel passing through it. The constant restoring force against which the movable part 15 is displaced is provided by feeding fuel under pressure from the line 22 to a chamber 37, where the fluid pressure acts on the end face 17 of the part 15. A throttle orifice 38 damps the movement of the part 15. The roller 40 acts at a position away from the centre-line of the movable part 15 so that it imparts a rotational movement which reduces friction. In a modification Fig.2 (not shown) the roller 40 is replaced by a lug having a curved surface which modifies the movement of the part 15 to compensate for errors in the fuel-air ratio arising from throttle effects in the induction pipe.
