Abstract

959,200. Apparatus for treating textiles. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Sept.13, 1961 [Sept.15, 1960], No. 31843/60. Heading D1L. Apparatus for laundering continuous lengths of textile material comprises a washing chamber, a pair of mangle rollers through which the material is introduced into the washing chamber, a plurality of pairs of mangle rollers and a plurality of guide rollers arranged so that the material is caused to travel in an extended path within the washing chamber, said path being above the normal level of liquid within the washing chamber, a plurality of groups of nozzles arranged to apply opposed jets of washing liquid to both sides of the material at a pressure of about 100 lb. per square inch at. a plurality of positions as it travels in its extended path, and a rinsing compartment into which the material can pass from the washing liquid through a pair of mangle rollers. In the embodiment shown a continuous length 1 of textile articles is introduced into a washing chamber 2 through a pair of mangle rollers 3 and is passed through chamber 2 via guide rollers 4 and additional pairs of mangle rollers 5, 6, and finally out of the chamber through a pair of mangle rollers 7 and into a rinsing compartment 8. Chamber 2 is divided into three compartments 9 and in each there is a plurality of nozzles 10 to direct jets of washing liquid against both sides of material 1. The material is kept above the level L of liquid in chamber 2 which level is maintained constant by a device 21. The spray liquid fall to the bottom of the compartment and is re-circulated by pumps 11 fresh detergent being added from stock tank 12 through valve 13 controlled by a conductivity coil 14. The chamber 2 pan be heated by steam pipes 15 controlled by thermostat 16. Each pair of mangle rollers consists of one steel roller and one rubber-covered roller - the outlet pair of rollers exerting a pressure of 120 lb. per linear inch and the others 20 lb. per linear inch. The material is mixed in chamber 8 being guided' therein by rollers 17 and also passing through mangle rollers 18. The liquid in chamber 8 is maintained at a constant level by device 20 and liquid from chamber 8 can be admitted to chamber 2 through constant level device 21. In an alternative arrangement for dealing with separate articles continuous belts are provided for supporting articles there between.
