Means for raising and lowering the folding beam of a metal folding machine comprises hydraulically operated means including piston and cylinder members, one of which is movable a chain attached at one end to the movable member and at the other end to the folding beam, and a sprocket about which the chain is trained, the sprocket being movable with the folding beam about the pivot axis thereof. A folding beam 11 is adjustably mounted between two carrier members 6 mounted for pivotal movement about trunnions 10. A chain 5 is secured at one end to each carrier member 6, runs over a sprocket 9 rigid with the carrier members and is attached at its other end to a piston-rod 4 of an hydraulic cylinder 1 to which hydraulic fluid is supplied to lower the rod 4 and turn the sprocket 9 and thus pivot the beam 11. The cylinders 1 at each end are connected to a common source of hydraulic pressure.
