Abstract

957,801. Printed circuits. R.W. FURNESS. July 7, 1961 [May 2, 1960], No. 15333/60. Heading H1R. [Also in Divisions B6 and H2] A flush-bonded printed circuit board is made by applying a metallic pattern surface to a flat surface of an insulating material embodying or formed of partially cured resin plastic, pressing the two surfaces together in a second stage to form a consolidated unit wherein the pattern is embedded level with the insulating surface, electro-plating the metallic pattern or a portion thereof, and finally flattening the unit in a heating and pressing stage which fully cures the resin plastic. As described, an electric switch plate, Figs. 1, 2, is formed by first applying an adhesive coated copper foil to a laminate 1 of paper or plastic fibre impregnated with an uncured resin and then applying heat and pressure which partially cures the resin and bonds the foil to the laminate, conductive portions 3 subsequently formed by a silk-screen or photo-etch process from the copper foil are then forced into the laminate 1 by further heat and pressure. After electroplating the conductive portions 3 with a layer 4 of hard gold or rhodium a final application of heat and pressure fully cures the resin laminate and results in a flush-bonded plate. The laminates may be bonded to a plastic or metal sheet 5 to increase the mechanical strength of the unit. Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), show a switch plate having two rows of contacts and common wiper ring.
