Abstract

957,460. Hot-water supply systems; cooling systems for internal-combustion engines; heat exchange apparatus. R. J. SEARLE. Jan. 17, 1963 [Nov. 3, 1961; Dec. 13, 1961], Nos. 39347/61 and 44618/61. Headings F4A, F4S and F4U. Water for human consumption is heated in a heat exchanger 1 by liquid circulating as the coolant in a liquid-cooled internal-combustion engine cooling system. The system shown is intended to be used in a vehicle or in a caravan where the domestic water is stored in a reservoir. The system includes a by-pass line incorporating a valve 10 and the pressure drop through the heat exchanger 1 is arranged to be higher than that through the open valve 10. Consequently, by manipulation of the valve 10, all the water may be caused to flow through the heat ex. changer 1, or through the by-pass, or in part through both so that the temperature of water discharged through the faucet 11 may be regulated. The heat exchanger 1 may be located in the header of the engine radiator, in the radiator by-pass duct, or in the engine water jacket. A preferred form of heat exchanger consists of an arrangement of concentric tubes for the water to be heated arranged in a chamber through which the engine coolant liquid is circulated (Figs. la, 1b not shown). An alternative form of heat exchanger consists of a conduit with a finned or corrugated wall.
