Abstract
The surface of a coated body is roughened by ultrasonic or near-ultrasonic vibration while the coating is in such a state of plasticity as to retain the variations of form induced by the vibration. As described with reference to electrolytically tin-plated strip or sheet, the coating is melted and then quenched, ultrasonic vibrations being applied to the strip or sheet before or during quenching by means of oscillator-coupled rolling elements which are pressed against the coated body. Alternatively, hot-dipped strip or sheet may be vibrated, after leaving the melt, in a palm oil bath by means of oscillators which are in direct, or indirect (through the oil), contact with the strip or sheet.ALSO:The surface of a coated body is roughened by ultrasonic or near-ultrasonic vibration while the coating is in such a state of plasticity as to retain the variations of form induced by the vibration. Plastic or lacquer coatings on metal sheets or strips may be roughened in this way.
