Abstract

[Also in Division E1] An assembly comprises at least one light metal boring rod 2 screw-threadedly cooperating with a steel rod connector 1, the connector being of larger diameter than the rod. The connector forms a shoulder about the rod, the shoulder being provided with an annular protecting member 5 surrounding the rod and extending for such an axial length that, when the assembly is in use, eddy currents formed by rising flushing liquid mixed with dust at the shoulder cannot affect the surface of the rod in the region of the shoulder. In the construction shown the annular member 5 comprises a cylinder integral with the connector 4. The annular member also includes a flanged sleeve, the flange being welded to the end face of the connector (Fig. 2, not shown), and a sleeve surrounding the rod 2 partly within and partly outside the joint, the sleeve either standing proud of the surface of the rod (Fig. 3, not shown), or being let into a groove in the surface of the rod (Fig. 4, not shown). The outer ends of the annular members are chamfered to provide a smooth transition between surfaces. The sleeves are shrunk on to the rod and these may be made of steel, rubber or a plastics material.
