Abstract

955,438. Stuffing-box substitutes. SUNDSTRAND INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION Ltd. Feb. 19, 1962 [Feb. 20, 1961], No. 6262/62. Heading F2B. [Also in Division F1] In a centrifugal pump (see Division F1) for fluids such as oil or water and which may be used in an aircraft, each impeller vane such as 23, 24 has a radial stiffener such as 30, 31 and the spaces between adjacent stiffeners ensure that any fluid leaking along the drive shaft 15 is not at the pump discharge pressure. A dynamic seal 35 provided with sealing vanes 54 at one side has a smooth face at the other so as to impart relatively little pressure to the leakage fluid. Passages 51 provide paths for the return of leakage fluid. When the impeller 21 is stationary or is rotating a low speed, fluid leaking past the vanes 54 passes through a restriction between a member 12 and the seal 35 and sprays on to a slinger disc 38 and is deflected thereby towards drain holes, one of which is shown at 53.
