Abstract

680,045. Stuffing-box substitutes. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. May 23, 1951 [June 26, 1950], No. 15903/50. Class 122 (v) A shaft 1 passing through the wall of a casing 2 is sealed when stationary or at low shaft speeds by two centrifugal type liquid seals one 12 between the shaft 1 and a sleeve 6 concentric with the shaft and the other 11 between the sleeve and the casing 2, the sleeve being mounted so that it can be rotated relative to the shaft and casing to maintain the seal. The sleeve has an external paddle-wheel 9 which operates in a recess 10 in the casing and a recess 13 provided with paddles and surrounding a flange 14 on the shaft. Normally, when the shaft speed is sufficiently high, the sleeve 6 is at rest and the shaft is sealed by a further centrifugal liquid seal 5 formed by a paddle 3 on the shaft operating in a recess 4 in the casing but when the shaft speed falls below that necessary to maintain the further seal 5 the sleeve 6 is automatically engaged and driven by gearing 8 and the shaft is sealed by the two liquid seals 11, 12.
