Abstract

954,907. Laminates. BOLT, BERANEK & NEWMAN Inc. March 31, 1960 [Nov. 5, 1959]. No. 11465/60. Heading B5N. A panel structure for providing high transmission loss at frequencies within a desired band of frequencies comprises a pair of outer surface members 3, 3<SP>1</SP> secured by adhesive coatings to an interior medium 4 or 4<SP>11</SP>, which is substantially incompressible but has low resistance to shear so that it may flex easily in response to shear stress, the coupling between said outer surface members also including transverse rigid supports 5, 5<SP>1</SP> spaced from each other and coupled to said interior medium. In several embodiments, of which two are shown in Figs. 1 and 6, the supports 5, 5<SP>1</SP> are integral with one or both outer surface members. The layer 4 may itself comprise a pair of layers laminated on opposite faces of a thin layer of metal, glass or mica (Fig. 4, not shown). In other embodiments, of which two are shown in Figs. 5 and 8 the supports 5 are separate from the surface members 3, 3<SP>1</SP> and are contained between layers 4<SP>11</SP> of said interior medium. In Fig. 8 the supports are connected by a central solid region 50. The surface member 3, Fig. 5, is perforated and is covered with sound absorbing material 8. In the embodiment of Fig. 9 the supports 501 are incorporated within the interior medium 4<SP>111</SP>. The interior medium may be of rubber, plasticized polyvinyl chloride or similar material, the surface members may be of steel and the adhesive may be an epoxy resin. The supports 5 may be of metal or gypsum. Specifications 943,256 and 954,908 are referred to.
