Abstract

Urethane modified ethylenically unsaturated vegetable oils having drying properties are prepared by reacting, with heating, a hydrocarbon diisocyanate and a diol system comprising a dihydroxy ester of an ethylenically unsaturated higher fatty acid of a vegetable oil with a lower polyol which has at least three alcoholic hydroxyl groups in the molecule and a polyglycol having a molecular weight in the range 150 to 2000, the amount of the polyglycol comprising from 8% to 50% by weight of the diol system, the amount of diisocyanate employed being substantially equivalent to the total hydroxyl of the diol system, and the amount of dihydroxy ester being sufficient to produce a final oil length of 20% to 75%, the reaction being continued with heating until the resultant urethane modified oil possesses substantially no free isocyanate. The reaction may be performed in the presence of an inert organic solvent, e.g. toluene xylene. The products are air-drying in the presence of siccatives such as cobalt naphthenate and may be used in the production of films. Specifications 914,414 and 953,357 are referred to.
