Abstract
Elastomeric polyurethanes are prepared by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with an hydroxyl-ended polymer in the presence of 0.001% to 0.1%, by weight of the hydroxylended polymer of thioglycollic acid. Aromatic diisocyanates such as tolylene-2,4 and -2,6-diisocyanates and mixtures thereof and 4,41-diisocyanato - diphenylmethan are preferred, whilst the hydroxyl-ended polymer is suitably a polyester containing a small amount of branching e.g. those derived from acids such as adipic acid with glycols such as ethylene, diethylene, propylene and butylene glycols together with small proportions of polyhydric alcohols having more than two hydroxyl groups such as glycerol, trimethylol propane, hexanetriol and pentaerythritol. The process is conveniently carried out by adding the thioglycollic acid to the dry hydroxyl-ended polymer, which mixture is then reacted with the polyisocyanate.
