Abstract

952,371. Change speed gear. AUTO TRANSMISSIONS Ltd. Jan. 22, 1962 [Feb. 13, 1961], No. 5210/61. Addition to 739,126. Heading F2D. In an overdrive planetary gear for a motor vehicle wherein input driven stepped planet gears 14 mesh an internally toothed driven ring 16 and a reaction sun 11 on a sleeve 10 carrying a clutch-brake member 13 which is clutched to the ring gear 16 for direct drive, as an alternative to a one way clutch 23 between the input and output shafts, and engages a fixed casing 17 for overdrive, the clutch-brake member 13 is connected to the sleeve 10 by a helical spline 18 or pin and cam slot (Fig. 2, not shown) to provide a torque-responsive axial force on the clutch-brake member. As shown the helical spline is arranged so that, in overdrive, the interaction increases the friction grip of the member 13 with the casing 17 during forward drive, whilst, in direct drive, it increases the grip of the member 13 with the ring gear 16 during reverse drive or forward overrunning. In Fig. 2 (not shown) a pin fast with the sleeve engages a V-shaped slot in the member 13 which increases the grip between member 13 and ring gear 16 during direct drive for both forward and reverse drive.
