Abstract

1508137 Change-speed gearing AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 23 Oct 1975 [24 Oct 1974] 46120/74 Heading F2D A variable-speed bevel planetary transmission unit is constructed such that an output gear is positioned intermediate the ends of the unit to enable final drive shafts of equal length to be used when the unit is mounted transversely in a vehicle below the engine. The transmission input shaft 16, driven from a torque converter through a chain and sprockets 13, 17, is connectible by a fluid-actuated clutch 19 with a bevel gear 36 and by a fluid-actuated clutch 24 at its other end with a bevel gear 37. These bevel gears mesh with one element 33 of a planetary cluster the other element 34 of which meshes with an output bevel gear 38 coupled to the output gear 40 through a sleeve 39 and with a bevel gear 49 controlled by a brake 51. Further brakes 52, 53 control the planet carrier 32 and the bevel gear 37. Also mounted on the sleeve 39 are a toothed parking brake wheel 47, a speedometer drive gear 48, and a governor (not shown) for controlling automatic ratio shifts. Low ratio drive through the gears 36, 33, 34, 38 is established when the clutch 19 is engaged, the carrier 32 being held by a one-way clutch 54. Other friction devices, in addition to the clutch 19 are engaged to establish the other forward ratios as follows. The brakes 51, 53 hold the gears 49, 37 for, respectively, second and third and the clutch 24 locks up the planetary train for direct top. Engagement of the clutch 24 with the brake 52 establishes reverse ratio. The gear 49 may be omitted if only three forward ratios are required.
