Abstract

Unsaturated aldehydes are prepared by oxidising olefins in the vapour phase by molecular oxygen at a temperature between 400 and 700 DEG C. in the presence of a bismuth phosphotungstate catalyst having the formula BiaPbWcOd in which a is 1-30, b is a positive integer not higher than 5, c is 12 and d is 36 to 93.5. Preferably the catalyst is one in which a is in the range 6-15. The catalyst may be supported, for example, on alumina, silica, boron phosphate, aluminium phosphate, clay, pumice stone, titania, diatomite or silicon carbide. The oxygen may be used in pure form or in a mixture with inert gases, e.g. air. Examples are given of the conversion of propylene to acrolein. Specification 912,795 is referred to.
