Abstract

Acyclic olefines are disproportionated, e.g. at 25 DEG C., in the presence of MoO3 or Re2O7 on Al2O3 which has been prepared by subliming on to acid treated Al2O3 a thermally decomposable compound of Mo or Re. Preferred olefines are C3- 30 and many from C3 to C8 are specified. In examples propylene is disproportionated to yield ethylene and n-butenes.ALSO:Disproportionation catalysts are prepared by treating Al2O3 with acid and heating an oxide of Mo or Re, or a compound of Mo or Re decomposable thereto, in a stream of carrier gas whereby the oxide of Mo or Re is sublimed onto Al2O3 located downstream. The alumina may be activated with HCl or CH3COOH and the catalyst which usually consists of MoO3 or Re2O7 on g Al3O3 may subsequently be activated by heating in an inertx/or oxidising gas.
