Abstract

947,616. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Sept. 21, 1962 [Sept. 22, 1961; Dec. 15, 1961], Nos. 33953/61 and 44960/61. Heading F2E. A disc brake comprises a friction pad 2, Fig. 1, engaging one face of the disc 1, carried on a lever 4 which is pivoted at 5 on a stationary torquetaking block 6 and a friction pad 3, engaging the other face of the disc, which is brought into engagement by the application, at an intermediate point 13, of a floating lever 10 of which one end is engaged by force-applying means and the other end is connected to the lever 4 to bring the pad 2 into engagement with the disc. In Fig. 1 the pad 3 is carried on a link 20 pivoted to the block 6 at 21. A spring 21a acting between the link 20 and the lever 10 retracts the pads on release of the brake. In Fig. 1, also, the floating lever 10 can be operated either mechanically, through a lever 15, or hydraulically, by cylinder and piston 16, 17. In this embodiment the connection between the levers 4 and 10 is through a link 9 and an adjusting screw which can be altered in length by a knurled head 12. Protective coverings 11, 19 are fitted. When the pad 3 is moved into frictional engagement with the disc 1, the reaction is transmitted through the link 9 and urges the pad 2 into engagement with the other side of the disc. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 a friction pad 23, which corresponds to the pad 3 in Fig. 1, is located and guided in a flanged opening in a fixed disc 37 (the rotatable disc not being shown). There are a pair of floating levers 29 which can either be hydraulically operated, 33 being the cylinder housing, or can be operated mechanically through twin levers 31, the lower ends of which have notches which receive a pin 30 carried in the lower ends of the levers 29, which in turn carry a fulcrum pin 32 which engages a face of the housing 33. A lever 24 corresponds to the lever 4 in Fig. 1 but, instead of the connecting link 9, the lever 24 is cranked at 27 and connected to the floating levers 29 through a knifeedge pivot 28. In the Fig. 3 embodiment an automatic adjusting device takes the form of a pin 35 engaging one limb of the operating levers 31, and carried on a disc 36 which, through a ratchet or one-way clutch, turns a snail cam 34 which engages the backing plate of the pad 23 and takes up wear. The embodiment shown in Fig. 7 is similar to that in Fig. 3 except that an intermediate point in a pair of floating levers 47 engages the adjacent friction pad through an automatic adjusting device 49 and the operating lever 50 has in it an inclined slot 53 engaged by a pin which is turned by movement of the lever and is connected to the device 49 through a ratchet or one-way clutch.
