Abstract

1,036,909. Internal shoe drum brakes. GIRLING Ltd. May 27, 1964 [June 8, 1963], No. 22946/63. Heading F2E. In a duo-servo type internal shoe drum brake which includes a cam or other mechanically operated device for separating the shoes, an operating cable is secured to the cam or other device and is passed over a quadrant which is pivoted to the back plate of the brake independently of the cam, there being means whereby relative sliding movement between the cable and quadrant is prevented. As shown applied to a brake operated both hydraulically and mechanically, the mechanical operating mechanism includes a quadrant 31 pivoted on a bracket 33 secured to the back plate 12 and rockable about an axis perpendicular to that of the brake. The cable 28 is secured at its end to a cam 20 and rests in a groove in the quadrant, passing from the latter through a hole 29 in the back plate which is sealed by a rubber boot. Alternatively, the back plate may have a recess so that the quadrant may be located within the recess on the exterior of the back plate and the cable led through a hole in the back plate to pass between the quadrant and the cam. The cam comprises a plate having raised portions 26 (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) on its rear face adapted to be disposed between blocks 27 which are welded on or integral with a pair of shoes 10, 11. A slot 25 in the cam receives a pivot pin 22 formed by an eccentric extension of an anchor pin 19 (Fig. 2, not shown) secured to the back plate for engagement with the shoe ends when in the rest position, so that the cam can float, the other ends of the shoes being connected by a floating adjuster (not shown). The cable 28 is operated by a hand lever, normal service operation of the brake being by an hydraulic cylinder 16 mounted on the back plate inwardly of the anchor pin 19.
