Abstract

[Also in Division F4] A combustion chamber shell for a gas-fired water heater comprises a flat-sided, open-ended metal shell 1 of rectangular horizontal crosssection having secured to each of its two opposed vertical sides a sinuous water-carrying pipe 4, the uppermost branch 6 of which extends around the junction between said side and a first adjoining vertical side at a point near the upper end of the shell and then vertically down the first adjoining side, whilst the lowermost branch 9 extends similarly on to a second adjoining vertical side at a point near the lower end of the shell and vertically up the second adjoining side, being connected through a hole 15 in the upper region of the shell to an internal heat exchanger (not shown) whose finned tubes are connected through further holes 15 by pipe bends 11, a continuous length of pipe thus being formed. In manufacture the pipe formations may be bent to the required shape and then secured to the pre-formed metal shell, or two sinuous formations may each be secured as shown in Fig. 4 to a flat rectangular metal sheet 13 which is punched at 15 and subsequently folded along the lines 16 to form half of the shell, the two halves being then joined together. Alternatively, the two sinuous formations may be suitably secured to a single rectangular sheet of metal which is then bent along the junctions between opposed and adjoining sides and the two edges joined to form the shell. The sinuous formation may be so disposed that the straight portions are vertical.
