Abstract

1,265,792. Water heaters. RADIATION Ltd. 14 March, 1969 [15 March, 1968], No. 12774/68. Heading F4A. A combustion chamber for a water heater comprises two body parts each of which is of cast metal and provides a wall of the combustion chamber, and at least one of which has embedded in it at least one water pipe and includes a plurality of heat-transferring fins. The instantaneous water heater shown in Figs. 7 and 8 comprises two identical aluminium castings 39 each of which is cast around a copper water pipe 38, Fig. 9, of serpentine shape. The two castings are fastened together with screws 57 to form a combustion chamber having fins 14 on its inside wall and the pipes 38 embedded in its outside wall. A further casting 37, see also Fig. 12, attached to the castings 39 has a serpentine pipe 50 embedded in it, with fins 51 cast around the straight portions 52 of the pipe. Semicircular bends 53 of the pipe and the two ends 54 of the pipe project slightly beyond the casting 37. The two ends 54 of the pipe 50 are connected to the upper ends of the pipes 38 by a pair of unions 59. The projecting lower ends 40 of the pipes 38 are connected to the cold water inlet pipe and the hot water outlet pipe through a water flow control section (not shown) which, together with a gas burner assembly, is mounted beneath the combustion chamber. In other embodiments, for circulatory water heating or for central heating, the top casting is omitted, and the pipes may be embedded in the inside walls of the two remaining castings or may comprise two horizontal header pipes connected by a number of vertical pipes. The fins may be strips of aluminium sheet, the edges of the strips being fixed to the respective casting when the latter is cast.
