A tobacco stream, prior to forming into a continuous rod, is trimmed by a means carrying a number of pins which pierce the stream and hold down the portion thereof below the pins whilst the excess tobacco above the pins is removed e.g. by suction. In Figs. 1 and 3 the stream 30, formed by carding mechanism 16 . . . 20 and carried by a belt 28, is trimmed by a pair of horizontal rotating discs 36 carrying fine needles 38 which interfit and move at the velocity of the stream, the excess tobacco above the needles being removed by a suction passage 37. In a modification, Fig. 5, the needles are carried by endless belts 46. The needles may be arranged in a single plane or, to produce dense end cigarettes, they may be in raised positions at spaced portions 72, Fig. 7 (not shown), to produce spaced portions of greater depth in the stream. When applied to a suction-type stream forming mechanism, Fig. 9, the excess tobacco trimmed off by the discs 78 is removed from beneath by a suction passage 78A.
