Abstract

928,029. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. March 13, 1962 [March 28, 1961], No. 9677/62. Class 130. A method of forming an endless stream of tobacco of desired weight comprises showering tobacco and forming a continuous stream of tobacco, trimming the excess so that the stream is of the desired weight and returning the excess to the stream upstream of the shower. As shown in Fig. 1, tobacco is showered from a duct 23 on to an endless belt 10 running between side guides 25. Excess tobacco is removed by a wire brush 27 and deflected into a suction tube 30 where it is carried upwardly by a cyclone 31. The separated tobacco settles to the bottom of the cyclone where it is delivered, via gate valve 35, back to the belt 10 upstream of the duct 23. After trimming, the rod of tobacco passes under a compressor wheel 28 to a cigarette rod forming apparatus. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 4, not shown), the excess tobacco is passed downwardly from the belt 10 on to a second endless conveyer which delivers it back to the belt 10 upstream of the duct 23.
