Abstract
944,687. Selective printing. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. July 25, 1962 [Aug. 16, 1961], No. 28535/62. Heading B6F. Apparatus for applying an impulse of short duration to a member, such as a printing hammer 16 1 , which is situated at the end of a chamber 38 1 and is movable only when the pressure in the chamber rises above a certain magnitude, comprises a sealed piston 28 1 to which momentum is imparted to decrease the volume of and increase the fluid pressure in the chamber 38 1 , the arrangement being such that the pressure in the chamber does not increase to a sufficient value to operate the hammer until the piston is nearing the end of its travel towards the hammer. The hammer is held in its retracted position by an external pressure or a spring. Momentum is imparted to the piston 28 1 by the admission through a port 32 1 of a fluid pressure impulse to the side 40 1 of the piston, this pressure being such that the pressure in the chamber 38 1 does not rise to the same value until the piston is nearing the end of its travel. The input pressure may be constant or may decrease as the piston moves towards the hammer, and is terminated either prior to or subsequent to the time when the hammer begins to move. Thereafter the high pressure in the chamber 38 1 which may be increased by hammer rebound causes the piston to be returned to its initial position. The end 29 1 of the piston may be tapered and the end 27 1 of the chamber 38 1 similarly shaped. As applied to printing mechanisms for pneumatic data-processing systems a number of hammers 16 1 ... 16 N selectively operated from a control source 36 co-operate with rings of type 24 1 ... 24 N on a rotating cylinder 20 or on rotating type wheels.
