Abstract

[Also in Division B8] A damping device for an air actuated power unit, e.g. a jack, comprises a fluid filled chamber 11, a rod 19 and piston 31 connected to the power unit, the piston having a part 42 permitting fluid to pass therethrough, and a floating piston 34 beneath which atmospheric air or pressure air via tube 38 is supplied so that when the rod and piston 31 move outwardly from the cylinder the floating piston 34 moves in the same direction to prevent a vacuum being formed between the piston 31 and piston 34. The part 42 has a spring biased valve 36 therein such that it is open below a predetermined rate of withdrawal of the rod and piston 31 and closed at and above said rate, when fluid can only pass through the clearance between the piston 31 and the cylinder 11, and on inward movement of the rod and piston 31 said valve permits fluid to pass relatively freely through the port. The valve may consist merely of a ball 40 with no spring. Alternatively, fluid transfer may be only through the clearance between the piston and cylinder, Fig. 7 (not shown). The embodiment of Fig. 3 shows the device in use with an air jack. Air is pumped into the portion 60 causing the cylinder 62 to rise thus causing the rod and piston 31 to rise. Pressure air to the portion below piston 34 is bled from the portion 60.
