944,158. Stuffing-box substitutes. AEROQUIP G.m.b.H. Feb. 28, 1961 [Feb. 29, 1960], No. 7375/61. Heading F2B. Sealing means for a ball bearing comprises a sealing sleeve 2 having an annular flange 4 compressed in a groove 5 in one race 6 and a sealing lip 3 pressed against a radial surface 12 on the other race 11 by a spring washer 1 formed of sinuous windings, as shown in Fig. 2, which when unstressed lie in the envelope of a truncated cone. The sleeve is centred by a shoulder 8 thereon engaging the surface 9 of the race 6. The washer 1 may be vulcanized into the sleeve 2. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the flange 4 is reinforced by an L-section rigid ring and press-fitted into a recess in the race 6.
