A gas burner for operation in an air stream flowing forwardly past the burner, comprises a burner body 34 provided with a row of main ports 58 and two rows of igniter ports 60 discharging raw gas or an air-gas mixture into a forwardly widening trough-shaped mixing space formed by plates 64 secured to the body 34 and having air apertures 74, 76, 78, 80. The plates 64 extend from shielding walls 70 disposed along opposite sides of the parts 58, 60 and the air apertures therein are provided with air deflectors 75, 77, 79, 81 which extend rearward into the passing air stream. The apertures are arranged in longitudinal rows and increase in size progressively from the burner body. The total aperture area is substantially less than the area of the mouth of the trough and the apertures are smaller than the wall areas between them. Each row of igniter ports 60 is covered by a wall 66 having a forwardly extending lip 68 forming a side of an outlet slot for the main ports 58. The ends of the apertured plates 64 are provided with flanges 63 through which bolts or rivets may be passed to interconnect the plates of adjacent burner sections. Burner sections having a cross or T-section may be bolted together to form various patterns. A gas-air mixture is delivered to the burner body 34 by a mixer comprising a blower having a gas inlet and an air inlet shutter. The rate of mixture supply is controlled by a controller responsive to a thermostat. The mixer supplies different gas-air proportions at different rates of supply. In modified constructions the diverging apertured walls are replaced by conical or pyramidal walls.
