Abstract

941,961. Boring earth &c. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. Sept. 28, 1960 [Sept. 28, 1959], No. 32893/59. Addition to 898,390. Heading EIF. Pipe racking mechanism comprises a power operated transport arm 62 pivoted at 63 adjacent the base of a derrick 10, and pipe gripping jaws 68, 69 mounted on a member 67 movable on the arm, the arrangement permitting pipes 44 to be added to or taken from the top of a drill string. During the adding or taking away of pipe whilst running in or pulling the string the arm and member are positioned as shown in Fig. 1, the pipe being moved from or to the string by spinning mechanism 19 carried by a pivoted arm 21 slidably mounted on post 17 on a lift platform 13. During the adding of pipe whilst drilling, the lift platform carrying a power swivel 20 is raised, and the arm and member are positioned as shown in Fig. 2. The drill string is slightly raised by a lower lift 14 and is supported by slips 72 whilst the pipe is joined to the swivel and the upper end of the string.
