Abstract

1,214,346. Boring earth &c. BYRON JACKSON Inc. 20 Nov., 1968 [4 Dec., 1967], No. 55153/68. Heading E1F. A derrick has a pipe rack including a finger board 55 comprising sections 68, 69 having fingers 105 .. 109, 111, 112 and 81, .. 87 respectively. The spaces 113, 95 in the sections are for drill collars 54 and the remaining spaces are for drill pipes 53, the collars and pipes being respectively held in the spaces by individually actuated latches 101, 97. The bottoms of the pipes and collars engage projections 158 on a base 156. A racker 51 having a gripper 121 on an extensible arm 118 carried by a carriage 122 is mounted above the finger board, and a similar racker 52 having a gripper arranged for an additional vertical movement is mounted below the board. After a drill string 26 is lifted through the rotary table 61 by elevators 44 until a stand 49 is clear of the slips 59, the string is locked in the table by the slips, the elevators are removed and the stand is gripped by rackers 51, 52, the head of the racker 52 being in its lowermost position. Power tongs 58 are operated to detach the stand, and the head of the racker 52 is raised to position the stand as shown. Both rackers are operated to bring the stand opposite and then into a space, the racker 52 lowers the stand onto a projection, the respective latch is operated to hold the stand, and the rackers are removed from the stand. The process is repeated for pulling the string, and the reversed process is repeated for making a string. The apparatus is mounted on a drilling vessel and may be controlled by a computer.
