Abstract
940,879. Accelerator valves. GRESHAM & CRAVEN Ltd. Dec. 22, 1961 [Jan. 25, 1961], No. 2890/61. Heading F2F. An accelerator valve for train braking systems comprises first and second chambers 10, 15 betwen which is a first valve seat 19 normally closed by a valve element 17 which is resiliently loaded by a spring 20 into engagement therewith and is carried by a movable member 13. The valve element has a first choke 27 extending therethrough so as to restrict communication between the chamber 15 and a third chamber 16 and is movable against the spring 20 into engagement with a second valve seat 25. The arrangement is such that when the valve element moves into engagement with the seat 25 communication between chambers 10 and 16 is provided only through the first choke 27 and a second choke 28 which is more restricted than the choke 27. In emergency operation an increase in the pressure of vacuum train pipe 11 causes the valve element to move into engagement with seat 25 so as to connect the train pipe to atmosphere via vent 21. After the vacuum in chamber 16 has been destroyed at a predetermined rate through the choke 28 the valve element 17 re-seats on seat 19.
