Abstract
940,067. Railway vehicle combined buff and draw gear. A. BROOM. March 14, 1960, No. 8837/60. Heading B7T. [Also in Division F2] A shock absorber is particularly described with respect to railway vehicle combined buff and draw gear mounted in a casing 6 fixed to the vehicle chassis, and comprises a buffer coupling head 7 attached to a shaft 17, and collars 11A, 11B and frusto-conical members 3, 4 which are slidably mounted on the shaft and may be abutted by either of the shoulders 17A or 18 to telescope with respect to a member 1 to compress and roll at least one resilient ring 5. The angle of taper of all the sides of the member 1 is the same, but in the male members 3, 4 the angles of taper of the rounded corners 8, 9, 10 differ, so that as the gear operates, the loading on the rings 5 is not uniform but is applied in balanced order, first to the portions of the rings adjacent sides 9, then to the portions adjacent the rounded corners 8, and finally to the portions adjacent sides 10. The rings may roll in operation and the gear may be pre-loaded. In other modifications the taper angles of the members 3, 4 may be the same whilst the angles of the bore of the member 1 may vary, or the rings may be of non-uniform cross-section. The load characteristics of the gear may be further varied by rotating the male members about their axes relative to the member 1. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 the members 12, 13, and 14 are grooved and different size rings are fitted therein, but the same effect may be obtained by varying the sizes of the grooves and using rings of the same size, or by a combination of groove and ring sizes.
