939,954. Axial-flow fans. J. SPARGO. Dec. 19, 1960, No. 43593/60. Class 110 (1). A sheet metal conical impeller 5 has circumferentially spaced openings 7. with imperforate portions 5a between. A blade 8 is pivotally mounted on each portion 5a by hinge parts 9- 12 and is biased by a spring 13 to close the corresponding opening 7 when the impeller is idle. When the impeller is in operation, each blade 8 is pivoted centrifugally against the action of the spring 13 into the impelling position shown. Spring 13 is U-shaped, with coils 13a embracing the hinge pin 12. The impeller 5 is coaxially mounted in a circular opening in a plate (not shown) with its peripheral rim between the plate and a ring (not shown) secured to the plate, and preferably has its periphery overlapping the margins of the circular openings in the ring and plate to prevent leakage. An annular shroud (not shown) attached to the plate extends laterally therefrom and encircles the impeller 5. Specification 628,345 is referred to.
