Abstract
A process for the production of spheroidal graphite cast iron by injecting an inert gas containing an innoculant and a spheroidizing agent entrained therein into a bath of molten cast iron comprises adding to the gas stream containing the innoculant and the spheroidizing agent a comminuted refractory diluent amounting to 40-70 per cent of the total injected material. The spheroidizing agent may be magnesium, a magnesium alloy, or a cerium-magnesium-ferrosilicon, the innoculant may be silicon or a silicon alloy; and the diluent may be calcium carbide. The sulphur content of the cast iron may be reduced to below 0.01 per cent by deoxidizing the melt and then injecting calcium carbide. Specifications 630,070 and 803,652 are referred to.
