In apparatus for automatically loading a pin-board, wound (or empty) bobbins delivered from a winding machine by a shoot or inclined slide are successively received and supported by a bottom piece carried by a traversing ledge moving transversely to the slide. A control cylinder movable in response to the deposition of each bobbin on the board comprises cams (arranged in correspondence with the arrangement of pins) which coact with a feeler to cause removal of the piece to an ineffective position to enable transfer of the bobbin to an empty pin. The piece is restored to its supporting position as the apparatus is prepared to receive the next bobbin. As shown in Fig. 2, after bobbin A has been delivered to a pin 3, an additional bobbin B falls from the slide 28 on to a catch rail 17 secured to a traversing ledge 11 but is also held temporarily by the end of the slide. When the bobbin registers with a recess 16 it falls into the position shown in Fig. 3, where it is supported by a bottom piece 15 and steadied by a forked holder 18. The weight of the bobbin tilts a lever 7, 8, so that a feeler roll 6 is engaged by a cam 5 on a control cylinder 4 to pivot a lever 9 (against the bias of a spring 13) from engagement with an abutment 14 and move a tongue 9a towards a magnet 12 which then rapidly completes the movement of lever 9, Fig. 4, so that piece 15 releases the bobbin and allows it to fall on to a pin 3. Continued movement of ledge 11, Fig. 1, causes a bolt 19 to engage a lever arm 20 which, through arm 22, link 23, arm 24, ratchet and wheel 26, 27, rotates cylinder 4 an increment to position another cam 5 corresponding to the next empty pin 3. At the end of the ledge traverse, bolt 19 engages and is downwardly urged by a stop member 21 so that lever 9 swings towards ledge 11 and the tongue 9a is disengaged from magnet 12 so that spring 13 restores lever 9 and associated mechanism to the position shown in Fig. 2. In a modification, 12 is an abutment, 14 is a magnet and the bias of spring 13 is reversed.
