Abstract

123,649. Lewis, R. G., and Day, J. T. April 23, 1918. Money-delivering apparatus.-In an apparatus for delivering change for Treasury and like notes, the note is brought and supported in a definite position in the path of movement of a tactor or gauge m, thereby controlling the position of the tactor according to the size of the note, the tactor in turn controlling mechanism whereby one or other of a series of change drawers is released. The tactor is pivotally mounted on one end of an arm l which is mounted so as to swing in a vertical arc about a pin at its other end. When a note is to be changed, a slide a is pulled out, the note 14 is placed in position thereon with its inner end against a series of stops, and the slide is pushed in. A stud d on the slide then engages a lever f, partially rotating its shaft g, and closes a jaw h, carried by the shaft, against a fixed jaw i, the leading edge of the note being gripped between the jaws. The partial rotation of the shaft g withdraws an extension f<2> of the lever f from the main or setting lever k, which thereupon falls, and with it descends the arm l carrying the tactor which is provided with feelers m<1>, m<2>. The inner feeler m<2> rests upon the note, and the outer feeler m<1> either rests on the note or descends into a slot in the slide supporting the note according to the size of the note present on the slide, the note of smaller value being too short to extend under the outer feeler m<1>. The end of the lever l on which the tactor is mounted thus descends to a position depending on the value of the note, and at the same time a projection o carried by an arm n depending from the lever l descends to a position opposite one or other of a series of slides p, q, corresponding to the series of notes for which the apparatus is intended. The main lever k in falling trips a catch n and releases a loaded operating lever s, which, in falling, partly rotates a cam wheel u, which oscillates a radius arm w, thereby carrying the projection o against the particular slide p or q opposite which it is positioned. Locking-means y, y<1> are thus released, and the corresponding change drawer may be drawn out, and the change extracted. As the drawer is pulled out, it re-sets the locking means so that when the drawer is pushed back again, it is automatically locked. At the same time, the next box of change in the pile drops into the drawer ready for another operation. On the slide a being again pulled out, the stud d thereon lifts the main lever k and the latter, by means of a slotted link 8, raises the loaded operating-lever s, which is then locked in its raised position by the catch r. Near the forward end of its travel, the stud d engages a hook 9 and thereby partially rotates the shaft g, opening the jaws h, i, and permitting the note held therein to fall into a receptacle provided for the purpose, and also engaging the extension f<2> under the end of the lever k. If the slide a is operated without a note being placed thereon, both feelers m<1>, m<2> descend into the slot in the slide, and the projection o descends below both the slides p, q, so that neither is operated, and no change can be extracted from the apparatus. In a modified form, the tactor, besides being pivoted on the arm l, is mounted at one end on a fixed fulcrum m<4>, Fig. 6, the feelers m<5>, m<6> being both arranged at the other end. The note may also be brought under the tactor by a tape, band, or roller system, the further motion of which releases the tactor to bear on the note. The mechanism for unlocking the change drawer may be arranged so that it may be manually operated when .required.
