Abstract

A process for coating particles of refractory oxides, particularly beryllia and alumina or blends thereof with metal by forming a fluidized suspension of the oxide particles with hydrogen, heating the fluidized particles and introducing a current of decomposable gaseous metal compound into the fluidized suspension, the temperature of the fluidized particles being at least that temperature at which the metal compound decomposes under the reducing conditions obtaining, whereby the metal compound decomposes on contact with said heated particles to deposit metal in situ on the particles and substantially completely coats the particles in said metal. The gaseous metal compound may be tungsten hexafluoride, WF6, or it may be molybdenum hexafluoride or tantalum pentafluoride. The oxide particles may be in the form of powder or fibres; when the particles are in powder form a suitable size is - 100 to + 325 mesh and when in fibre form the cross-sectional diameter should be 100-1000 microns. Coating thicknesses may be from 1-20 microns and the proportion of H2/WF6 in the gaseous flow on a volume basis, is about 10 or more. The Specification also refers to the coating of BeO and Al2O3 by chromium. A coating temperature of 600 DEG C. is quoted.
