Abstract

Adherent metal coatings are formed on bases of ceramic, refractory or high melting point vitreous materials by applying to the base a liquid containing a fusible vitreous enamel and a colloidal or finely divided metal compound, firing the base in a reducing atmosphere at a temperature sufficient to fuse the vitreous enamel and. if the metal is present in the form of a compound, sufficient to reduce the compound to the metal, applying to the coating so formed a liquid evaporable binder containing a colloidal or finely divided metal or metal compound, and firing the base in a reducing atmosphere for a second time at a temperature lower than that of the first firing but sufficient to evaporate the binder and, if the metal is present in the form of a compound, sufficient to reduce the compound to the metal. A ceramic tube may be coated with silver by applying a liquid comprising a mixture of finely divided lead boro-silicate and finely divided silver suspended in oil of wintergreen, preferably thinned with nitrocellulose in amyl acetate, firing for twenty-five to thirty-five minutes at 750 DEG C.-800 DEG C. in a reducing atmosphere, applying finely divided silver suspended in oil of wintergreen and again firing for twenty-five to thirty-five minutes at 600 DEG C.-650 DEG C.: the latter part of the process may be repeated or the coating may be thickened electrolytically. Alternatively, platinum, tungsten, molybdenum, nickel, copper or iron may be used for either or both coatings.
