Abstract

934,883. Knitting machines. R. STOLL, E. STOLL, H. STOLL, G. STOLL, and E. STOLL, [trading as H. STOLL & CO.]. Oct. 24, 1960 [Oct. 23, 1959], No. 36485/60. Class 74 (2). A flat knitting machine has main needle beds 1, 2, Fig. 1, in inverted V-formation and at least one pair of auxiliary needle beds 3, 4 in opposite V-formation. The beds 1, 2 have stitchforming and transfer needles of the latch-less type with a main hooked shank 9 and a relatively slidable outer sheath 12, the latter serving both for closing the hook of shank 9 for casting off a stitch and as a transfer point. The auxiliary beds 3, 4 are provided with from three to six receiver elements 15 and are adapted to be racked in known fashion relatively to the main needle beds to enable a narrowing operation to be carried out. The shank of each needle 9 is provided with guide grooves 10, 11 in which slide ribs on both the sheaths 12 and the opposing elements 15. In operation, needles 9 and elements 15 are advanced as in Fig. 6 and a stitch M is raised along the ramp S on to the outer edge R of the needle 9 directly above a stitch receiving notch 18 of the element 15. The needle 9, sheath 12 and element 15 are then moved down together, the stitch M passing off the edge R of needle 9 on to the outer surface of element 15. The needle 9 is then withdrawn by a slider 20 mounted in the intermediate element 15 and the element 15 is also withdrawn to allow the stitch M to drop into the notch 18. The rocking of the auxiliary bed 3 or 4 is then performed to the extent required and as in Fig. 8 the appropriate needle 9 is advanced and lifts the stitch M from the notch 18 by its ramp S. The element 15 then returns to its original position as in Fig. 1 and needle 9 is also retracted, the stitch sliding back into the hook. For stitch transference from the needles of one main bed to the other each stitch M is lifted on to its sheath 12 as in Fig. 9 and the needle of the other bed is advanced and receives the stitch on retraction of the said sheath.
