In a straight bar rib machine, the spring beard frame or " jersey " needles are divided into two sets, namely, those alternate ones 21 fixed in a main bar 20 and always knitting, and the intermediate needles 24, set in an auxiliary bar 26, which are idle in rib knitting. The needles 24 are slidable in slots in the main bar 20, and the bar 26 is movable between an upper position in which the needles 24 are aligned and form a complete bed with the needles 21 for plain knitting and a lower position in which the needles 24 are inactive after their loops have been transferred to rib needles 38, which may be latch needles as shown. The rib needles are provided with transfer clips 39 having points 40 and shoulders 41 bowed away from the needles; and the needles themselves have shoulders to prevent the loops sliding too far back for satisfactory transfer to the needles 24. There are also provided sinkers 30, knockover bits 34, picot points 37 and narrowing points. The picot points take the loops off the needles 24 for transfer to the needles 38, the latches of which may have upwardly projecting spoons to ensure that yarn held in the throats of the sinkers shall open any closed latches: alternatively, brushes or wire latch openers may be provided. On the last course of rib work, the plain needles are held down as the rib needles move into transfer position. All the plain needles then rise so that the needles 24 pierce the rib loops; and the rib needles and cast-off bar are withdrawn. The sinkers are then projected to hold down the fabric and plain knitting proceeds. V-necked sweater blanks, Fig. 7, are knitted in string formation.
