The invention is concerned with a novel tie member 2 (Fig. 4) for a cantilever support for an electric traction system contact wire. The support system comprises a mast or other vertical support member 31, a horizontal tie member which comprises a tension insulator 35 and a tie bar 2 constructed according to the invention, and an inclined strut formed of a metallic member 29 and a porcelain insulator 30. Bracket 33 carries a catenary suspension clamp and further down the strut is a registration arm 27 carrying an adjustable drop bracket 37 and a steady arm 38 for the contact wire. The tie bar, shown in detail in Fig. 3, consists of a male member 2 with an eye bolt 17 at one end sliding in a female member 12 also carrying an eye bolt 3. At one end of the female member is a rectangular block 4 which houses an eye bolt through which the male member passes. When a nut is tightened the lower part of the eye bolt is drawn into one of notches 21 on the lower side of the male member to clamp the male and female member together. The end of the male member is provided with sideways lugs 16 which slide on runners 13 provided in the bottom of the female member, and engage the block 4 to prevent the male and female members separating if the clamp fails. The male may be withdrawn by pushing the male member right in when the lugs 16 pass through the runners 13, rotating the male member through 90 degrees and withdrawing it through the eye bolt. The female member is a galvanized iron casting and the male member 5 is of forged steel. A further embodiment is described in which the female is a circular tube with a slot in it in which a stud on the male can slide. A nut on the stud can clamp male and female together. The end of the slot is circumferential so that if the clamp fails the stud strikes the circumferential portion. The slot then runs axially again so that by relative rotation male and female may be separated.
