Abstract
835,227. Supporting trolley wires. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. June 27, 1956 [June 28, 1955: Jan. 25, 1956], Nos. 18723/55 and 2539/56. Class 36. A steady arm for a catenary-supported overhead contact wire, incorporating Scott Russell's parallel motion, comprises a link 9 pivotally connected at one end to a roller 11, which is free to slide horizontally in guides 12, and supporting at the other end 15 the contact wire 2. A second link 10 is pivotally connected at one end 13 to the centre of the first link and at the other end 14 to a horizontal support 4 which also supports the guides 12 and is in turn supported from a stanchion 6 by an insulator 5 and from the catenary wire 3 by a stirrup 8. The link 9 may have the lower end bent to bring the contact wire 2 into alignment with the pivots 11 and 13, the distances between points 11 and 13; 13 and 2, and 13 and 14 being made equal so that the locus of the contact wire 2 is a vertical straight line. A refinement incorporating two sets of linkages superimposed to avoid twisting of the contact wire is described, as are methods of supporting the device wholly from the catenary wire and twin arrangements for use where two contact wires approach one another and then recede as at main line crossovers (Figs. 4-8, not shown).
