Abstract

933,424. Fluid-pressure apparatus. E. MATHEWS ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. May 31, 1962 [Dec. 14, 1961], No. 44839/61. Class 69 (2). A fluid-pressure actuator comprises a pair of double-acting pistons 25 mounted in juxtaposed and mutually-parallel cylinders 11, 12, an output shaft 23 mounted in bearings so as to extend between the cylinders and normal to their axes, and racks 26 on the pistons engaging a pinion 24 on the shaft. The cylinders are formed in a housing 10 which is formed with passages connected to ports 28, 29 and openings leading into the ends of the cylinders. The passages are arranged so that the port 28 is connected to the left-hand end of cylinder 11 and right-hand end of cylinder 12 and the port 29 is connected to the opposite ends of the cylinders whereby fluid supplied from a source under the control of a selector valve to port 28 or port 29 moves the pistons in one direction or the other to rotate the shaft which is mounted in bearings in the housing. The ends of the pistons are provided with plungers 46 urged outwardly by springs 47 to engage the openings at the ends of the cylinders as the pistons approach the ends of their strokes so that the flow of fluid from the cylinders is restricted to provide a dampening effect. The pistons are provided with seals 27 and the space between the seals is connected by a one-way valve to the outside of the body to relieve pressure in the central portions of the cylinders. The stroke of the pistons may be varied by altering the plungers 46 so that, when retracted, they still project from the ends of the pistons. Friction between the pistons and the walls of the cylinders may be reduced by forming the pistons with longitudinal grooves for receiving balls arranged to engage the bottoms of the grooves and the walls.
