Abstract

The invention comprises steroids of the general formula <FORM:0932249/IV(a)/1> wherein R1 represents an alkyl group containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms and Z represents the group <FORM:0932249/IV(a)/2> and the preparation thereof by etherifying the corresponding 17b -hydroxy steroid compounds, for example by reacting the required alkyl halides with the alcoholates of the 17b -hydroxy steroid compounds (prepared by reaction with sodium in liquid ammonia in the presence of a trace of ferric nitrate)-in this process it is preferable to convert the reactant into a 3-enol ether, etherify at the 17b -position and regenerate the 3-keto group from the resulting 3-enol ether of a 17b -alkyl-ether 19-nor-testosterone, and by treating the required 17b -hydroxy steroid compounds with diazo-alkane.
