Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formulae:-<FORM:0920638/IV(a)/1> <FORM:0920638/IV(a)/2> (wherein R is a hydrocarbon carboxylic acyl group of up to 12 carbon atoms, R1 is the same as R or a lower alkyl group, and X is hydrogen, bromine, chlorine or iodine), also 3-lower alkyl enol ethers of 17b -acyloxy-17-isoprogesterone together with a process for the preparation of a steroid having as its sole substituent at C17, a 17b -acetyl group, by reacting a steroid having at C17 a 17a -acetyl group and a 17b -acyloxy group with an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal in liquid ammonia, followed by reaction with a lower aliphatic alcohol, with the proviso that in the case when an alkali metal is chosen as the reactant the resultant 20-hydroxy compound is oxidised to the 20-keto group by a method known per se. Detailed examples illustrate the invention.
