932,187. Colour relevision tubes. SYLVANIA - THORN COLOUR TELEVISION LABORATORIES Ltd. July 27, 1960 [Aug. 14, 1959], No. 27943/59, Class 39 (1). A viewing screen for a colour television receiver comprises, in the order named proceeding from a transparent face-plate 11, colour phosphor strips R, G, B, light-emissive index strips I, and a metallic coating A 1 , A 2 which, between the strips I, is continuous and of high light-reflecting power and which, over strips I, is discontinuous and of substantially higher light-transmitting power than the continuous coating. Light from the index strips passes through a window in the wall of the cathode-ray tube, e.g. to a photomultiplier. As shown, during manufacture of the screen, a layer N of nitrocellulose is applied over the phosphor strips and intervening guard bands D of opaque material, before application of the index strips I, which emit light mainly in the violet and ultra-violet part of the spectrum, and which may comprise calcium magnesium silicate or calcium aluminium silicate activated by cerium. A layer of aluminium is then evaporated on to the exposed surface, forming a continuous coating on the smooth layer N but a discontinuous coating on the strips I transmitting 20-25% of the light emitted therefrom. The layer N may remain in the finished screen or be wholly or largely removed in a subsequent baking process. Specifications 895,772, 932,185 and 932,186 are referred to.
