Abstract

931,911. Tyre tread studs. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Dec. 31, 1959 [Jan. 14, 1959], No. 1318/59. Class 144 (2). A tyre tread stud 4 comprises a shank 5 to extend through a radial hole 15 in the tyre tread so that an integral base portion 6 (or detachable base portion, Fig. 4) bears on the inside of the tread and a detachable head portion 10 screwed on to the shank (or internal head portion 19) bears against the outside of the tread, the bead end of the shank 5 (or the head 19) being bored (or recessed) to receive an insert 12 (or 25) of cemented carbide which has a straight-edged ground-engaging end. As shown in Fig. 1, the insert is tapered to wedge in the shank bore 11 and its outer end is shaped to square-section. Figs. 4 and 6 shows the insert 25 to be of T-form with its cross-piece brazed into a transverse slot 24 in the shank head 19, the projecting limb 26 of the insert being of square section with either a flat end or a chisel-edged end. For mounting the studs in a tread a noze-piece 16, Fig. 3, may be temporarily screwed on to the stud shank.
