Abstract
928,811. Latch fastenings. ATWOOD VACUUM MACHINE CO. Nov. 26, 1959 [Nov. 26, 1958], No. 40289/59. Class 44. In order to prevent the latched door lock of a car from parting in the event of the vehicle crashing, due to the spreading apart of door and door post under impact, the lock keeper 18, Figs. 1, 2, attached to the door post incorporates a recess 34 which houses a roller 23 attached to the bolt 15 of the lock when keeper and bolt are latched. The roller is freely rotatable at the outer end of a stub shaft 19 which is mounted in the door 22 and carries the bolt 15 the teeth 26, 27 of which, in the latched position of the lock, engages cam surfaces 16, 17, on the keeper. The roller 23 is held against a track 33 in the recess 34 by a spring-actuated cam 36 which acts as an anti-rattle device and as a spring means to assist unlatching of the lock. In a modified lock, the bolt 15a, Figs. 6 and 9, is of the cam type and the keeper 18b has a ramp 49<SP>1</SP> so that even if the door sags appreciably the roller 23a may run up the ramp for easy latching of bolt and keeper. In another embodiment the bolt 15b is in two halves and the disc-shaped roller 23b, Figs. 12, 15, is urged against the track 23 by a spring steel strip 36b whilst in yet another construction the roller 23d, Fig. 13, is held in closed position by a spring-loaded wedge 36d slidable along a spindle 63. In a described lock mechanism a ratchet 20<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 16, actuating the bolt has teeth 54, 55, the former of which is engageable by a pawl 24b in the " safety " position of the bolt, as position as is shown in Fig. 13, and the latter of which the pawl engages in the fully locked position-as shown in Fig. 12. A spring 56 urges the pawl into engagement with the ratchet and the pawl arm 59 is arranged to be actuated by a push-button or handle element on the door so that the door may be opened when the pawl is moved, provided an inside operable pawl 60 which engages a ratchet tooth 61 has not been set in the locked position shown.
