Abstract
1,021,837. Latch fastenings. WARTSILAYHTYMA OY WARTSILA-KONCERNEN A.B. Dec. 19, 1962 [Dec. 19, 1961], No. 47875/62. Heading E2A. A latch mechanism for mounting on the inside surface of a door of a building and adapted to be operated from outside the door by a cylinder lock and to coact with a toothed keeper fastened to the door frame, comprises a base member 1 and a handle 12 adapted to be mounted on the inside surface of the door, a gear bolt 2 and a ratchet wheel 4 mounted on a common spindle 3 rotatable in a bearing 5 carried by the base member, a ratchet pawl 6 and a spring 9<SP>1</SP> acting on the pawl both carried by the base member, a push button 13 carried by the handle and a cylinder lock in the push button having a stem 16 carrying a part 17 which when the push button is pushed down rotates the pawl so that it releases the ratchet wheel and bolt for free rotation. In the construction shown, a cover 10 is fastened to the base member 1 to cover the mechanism and in the cover is a socket which receives a head 11 of the handle so that the handle can be positioned as desired relative to the cover. The stem 16 of the cylinder lock in the push button carries a pin 20 which in the unlocked position of this lock is movable by depression of the push button through an opening 21 in the base 15 of the handle head 11 but which when the lock is rotated to locked position abuts one side or other of the base 15 of the head 11 so that the push button is either held in its normal position in which case the bolt cannot be released or it is held depressed in which case the pawl is out of contact with the ratchet wheel and the bolt is free to rotate. A sliding catch member 19 is also provided on the handle which is engageable with the push button to hold it depressed. A cam 22<SP>1</SP> is rotatably mounted on the base member 1 and this has an aperture for connection to the stem of the cylinder lock mounted on the outside of the door so that rotation of this cylinder lock rotates the cam and since the cam engages the pawl it frees the pawl from the ratchet wheel to allow the door to be opened from the outside. The keeper, Fig. 5, comprises a rack 24 carried by a frame 23. The frame has a base portion and two arms 28 which are connected to the base portions at one end only so that the rack 24 can be clamped between the arms and the base portion by screws 31. This enables the position of the rack to be adjusted.
