Abstract

928,121. Heating, puffing and/or roasting grain &c. RICE GROWERS ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA. Dec. 23,1960, No. 44283/60. Class 58. In a process and apparatus for uniformly heating, e.g. puffing and/or roasting, rice, maize, coffee, nuts, potato chips and similar fungible particulate material, the material is fed, through a shoot 22, on to an annular horizontal screen 7, secured around a plate 6, around a central tube 10, within a cylindrical housing 1, which is open at the top and mounted, on springs 17, on a supporting base member 18. An electric motor 11, having weights 13 and 14 adjustably mounted, out of balance, on its rotating shaft, is mounted in the tube 10. The shaft of the motor is vertical and coaxial with the tube. The motor shakes the housing 1 and the material is moved along the screen, in a substantially circular path, from one side of a baffle 20 to an outlet shoot 25 on the other side of it and thence on to a conveyer 36. The screen 7 may increase, progressively, in width in the direction of movement of the material. The portion 3 of the housing below the screen is closed by a bottom plate 4. Air, heated by burners 30, is blown, by a blower 28, into the portion 13 and through the screen and the material thereon. U.S.A. Specification 2,284,671 is referred to.
