Abstract

A process for gasifying solid fuels, e.g. coal, under a pressure of 15 to 30 atmospheres of steam and in the presence of oxygen, comprises injecting into the generator, whilst operating on one or more solid fuel beds, a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon fuel, e.g. a liquid, vaporous or gaseous petroleum fraction, or natural gas. The petroleum fraction is preferably injected with the steam in counter current with the coal and ahead of the oxygen injection point, and may be introduced about the grate or at a higher point in the generator, e.g. 1/2 to 2/3 up the apparatus. If a heavy oil is employed, part at least may be slurried with the coal, or oil may be introduced via a pipe depending into a cone (apex upwards) mounted in the bed. The hydrocarbon fuel may include additives (corrosion inhibitors &c.). The process is applicable to slagging gasifiers of the Rummel type, the hydrocarbon fuel being injected just above or just below the liquid ash pool.
